Our mission is to provide young people with the support, skills and strategies needed to discover their strengths, develop their mindsets and ultimately design their futures. Your support helps us sustain our mission and build a movement to support the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers.
What makes us different? There are a range of charitable organisations and social enterprises offering programmes to improve the life chances of young people. However, GT Scholars has the capacity to work with all state school pupils, not just those on Free School Meals. This means that we can help a wide range of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, and pupils do not need to be referred by their school in order to qualify for support.
About the Board: The overall purpose of the Non-Executive Board of Directors is to make sure that the organisation delivers its stated purposes. We are looking for Non-Executive Directors who can make use of their skills, experience and expertise to ensure the success of the organisation.
We aim to have a diverse board, and we are looking for professionals with experience in at least one of the following sectors: Education, HR, Accounting, Finance, Law, Tech, Charity, Social Enterprise, Public Sector Procurement, Marketing, Corporate Partnerships, Sponsorship or Business Development.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting with developing or long-term strategy, monitoring our goals and evaluating our impact
- Preparing for, attending and actively participating in quarterly board meetings
- Ensuring the financial stability of the organisation
- Safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation
- Attending induction and additional training to support their role
- Representing the organisation at external meetings or events
- Assisting with shortlisting, interviewing and recruiting new board members when required
- Monitoring the performance of directors and providing mentorship and guidance to directors within the organisation
Person Specification:
- Have a passion and enthusiasm for social mobility and educational equality
- Be committed to the organisation’s vision and aims
- Be educated to a minimum of degree level
- Enjoy working in a diverse team
- Be numerate and possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Time Commitments:
The role will take approximately 1.5 hours per month or 6 hours per quarter. Time commitments will usually include:
- 6-8 hours of board meetings (Sept, Dec, March & July)
- 3 hours of annual training and self-evaluation to ensure effectiveness of the board (Flexible)
- 3 hours on the interview panel for selecting new board members or managers (Flexible)
- 3 hours providing mentorship, guidance or support to the directors and/or other managers (Flexible)
Exclusions: We are unable to accept board members who:
- Are under 18 years old
- Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception (such as fraud)
- Are bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement (eg an IVA) with a creditor
- Have been removed as a company director, nonexecutive director or charity trustee because of wrongdoing
Additional Information: Please note that this is a volunteer role. You will be provided with induction and training for your role, and you will be reimbursed for transportation fees.
